I have been watching older TED Talks these days. In the talk ‘Nerdcore comedy‘, Ze Frank jokes that what makes websites popular is -
Dance like an idiot, and don’t sell anything.
and this was in 2004.
He also talks about building social spaces where people can come together. Peripheral activities like haikus, that allow people to get together, doing fun things. They actually get to know each other, and it’s these low threshold peripheral activities that are key to bringing up some of our social capital that we are lacking.
This makes complete sense given the immense success of TikTok today. ‘Dance like an idiot, and don’t sell anything’, may as well be TikTok’s tagline.

What do you think of this? Does any other example come to mind?
